Sláinte friends, and welcome to “Katie’s Corner,” where we’ll be delving into the heart and history of our beloved pub, J.D. Falvey’s. Grab a pint, pull up a chair, and let me take you on a journey through time.
A Legacy Begins: 1894
While nearly everyone associates J.D. Falvey’s with Lower Bridge Street, the business actually started It all started back in 1894 on Langford Street, on the site where Quinlan’s is today. After being refused in 1893, John Daniel Falvey, or J.D. as he was known, secured a license to sell “Beer, Wine, and Spirits” at his dwelling house on Langford Street in 1894 and J.D. Falvey’s was born, marking the beginning of a legacy that has spanned over a century.
A New Home on Lower Bridge Street: 1902
After seven successful years on Langford Street, J.D. set his sights on a new location, one that would become synonymous with the Falvey name. In 1902, he purchased the land on Lower Bridge Street and constructed the iconic building that still stands today. It’s a testament to the craftsmanship of the era, with thick stone walls, a cozy fireplace, and a timeless charm that welcomes all who enter.
Passing the Torch: Generations of Falveys
Following J.D.’s passing in 1935, the pub was passed down to his son, John Joe, who continued the tradition of warm hospitality and quality pints. In 1977, J.D.’s grandson, Declan, took over the reins, running the pub with his wife Breeda for an impressive 46 years.
A New Chapter: 2023
As Breeda and Declan decided to embark on a well-deserved retirement, they entrusted the pub to Dave and myself. We were honored to accept the challenge, eager to carry on the Falvey legacy while adding our own personal touch. Our aim is to preserve the heart and soul of J.D. Falvey’s, ensuring it remains a warm and welcoming gathering place for the Killorglin community and visitors alike.
More Than Just a Pub
J.D. Falvey’s is more than just a place to enjoy a drink. It’s a place where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and memories are made. It’s a place where the spirit of Killorglin comes alive, where the craic is always flowing, and where a warm welcome awaits you.
I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the history of J.D. Falvey’s. Stay tuned for more stories from “Katie’s Corner,” where we’ll share updates, insights, and anecdotes from behind the bar.
